How to Become a Cosmetologist in Rhode Island

Parker Dickens - Tuesday, July 02, 2019

  1. 1. Get an education!
  2. 2. Get licensed!
  3. 3. Pursue the future you’ve created!

1. Get an Education
To create beauty, you have to learn beautifully. Start off your journey to becoming a beauty pro by choosing to get an education from a school you trust and love.

H How to Choose a School
There are a lot of options for getting a beauty education. How do you narrow it down? Take a tour! Choose a handful of schools in your area and book a tour of the campus. A tour is the perfect way to find out if a school is a good fit for you. While you’re on your tour, ask questions! Here are a few to get you started.

What Does Your Cosmetology Curriculum Offer?

Find a school that offers a cosmetology program that offers what you actually want to learn. Not only should the school teach you practical skills, but they should cover the theory of cosmetology. You need to know the foundations of what you’ll be practicing.

You’ll want to look for a school that is helping you prepare for life after graduation. Schools that offer teachings in job training, interviews, and marketing yourself should top your list!

Here at MKG Beauty & Business Academy, we prioritize the individual. That means we understand that each student has their own goals and passions. We also understand that today’s beauty pros must have a standard of education backing them in order to be successful. That’s why we strive to keep our cosmetology curriculum up to date and packed with the latest trends.

Will I Fit In?

Will you thrive at the school of your choice? This is something to consider when you’re assessing culture fit. Take a look at the school’s social media accounts, their blog, and even ask current and past students what their experiences were like

During your tour, take note on what the school’s environment is like. Get to know the person taking you on a tour, they can help you figure out if it’s the school for you!

At MKG Beauty & Business Academy, we want each student to do well, and we want them to be themselves while they do it. If you’re unique, driven, and eager to learn, our school might be the perfect fit for you!

What Does a Day in the Life Look Like?

What will you do every day? Will you get to practice in the student salon? When does that begin? There are so many fun things to do in beauty school! You can find out more about what it looks like to move through the phases of school by asking about the timeline for skill achievement and graduation.

How Will I Fund My Future?

OK, so you’ve asked all the questions about fitting in, making sure the program offers the education you need, and you’re almost ready to commit. Congrats! The biggest problem students have with finally enrolling is a financial one. How will you pay for school?

Ask the schools you tour if they offer financial aid, scholarships, or other forms of financial assistance. Some schools even have payment plans!

Don’t quit your dream because of financial roadblocks!

MKG Beauty & Business Academy offers financial aid to those who qualify, and we offer payment plans! Our team wants to help you become the cosmetologist you’ve always dreamed you’d be!

You’ve got your education, you passed the state exam, and now you’re ready to take on the world of beauty. Good for you! This industry is vast and full of potential. Not sure where to start? Consider a few of these amazing careers!

Salon Cosmetologist
If you love working one-on-one, helping others, and like to work in energetic environments, consider looking for a job in a salon! Salons allow you to work side-by-side with other professionals while achieving personal success with your clients. Another great reason to consider the salon life is the menu of services you can offer! Each salon has its own flavor, which means they may specialize in one area of cosmetology or in all areas! What will you do in a salon?

Freelance

Do you want to set your own schedule and be your own boss? Consider going freelance! Whether you’re attending to brides on their special days or just taking a handful of exclusive guests, your future is up to you to design as a freelancer.

Platform Artist

If you have a passion for a specific brand, you may want to consider getting your start in the business side of beauty. Many big name brands have their own teams of stylists who test products before launch or demonstrate them on stage at the trendiest beauty expos. If you’re ready to rock the stage, consider this career!
